Marthe Schönau studied Private Law and Spanish Language and Culture in Amsterdam (Universiteit van Amsterdam) and in Madrid (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). She has been a lawyer since May 2010. Until February 2018, Marthe was a senior associate with the commercial and corporate litigation departments of Stibbe in Amsterdam where she assisted clients in proceedings before the state courts as well as in arbitration cases. In 2015 Marthe was seconded to the litigation department of Spanish law firm Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira in Madrid.
Marthe acts in cases in the field of corporate and contract law. She advises and litigates on matters involving both contractual and noncontractual liability issues. Her expertise includes assisting clients in trade disputes, but also director’s and product liability and shareholder disputes. Recently, her focus has extended to auditor’s liability and auditor’s disciplinary law.
Marthe is an experienced, hands-on and involved litigator creating close partnerships with her clients in every case.
Marthe has memberships with Vereeniging Handelsrecht, Vereniging voor Corporate Litigation and the Dutch Journal of Financial Reporting Law (Tijdschrift voor Jaarrekeningenrecht). Marthe speaks Spanish fluently.

Marthe has registered general law of obligations in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister). Based on this registration, she is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in each registered principal legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
